About 10 years ago, some friends and I set out towards colorado for a ski trip. No reservations, no schedule, and as it turns out, no snow. Checking weather reports we headed for Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The town of jackson is a great mountian town set in a valley created by the Teton Range. When an adventure photography workshop was talked about on www.wheelsandwax.com , I packed up the car and headed to Wy.
Rich Clarkson and Associates hosted a National Geographic Adventure Photography workshop in Jackson WY. After meeting Ron on sunday night, a few of us planned a 6am outing with Jim Balog. (it’s a rare treat to shoot with a photographer with his credentials. just check out his latest project (Extreme Ice Survey) that has landed him all over the mainstream media) Jim’s “personal” projects are massive undertakings that show an Environmental Conciousness. His presentation made me want to sell my car and charge my laptop with solar panels.
Back to shooting with Jim. In Wyoming, what do you shoot in the morning? moose. I’ve never seen a moose up close before. Didn’t know that they can attack people.
I had 400 images of Moose, and no idea what a good moose picture was. We headed back to the hotel and arrived in the middle of the morning presentation.
Corey Rich began his career as a climbing photographer. In his early days, an upgrade to a Ford Econoline Van was a major milestone. After a brief morning discussion, the group set out for our first planned shoot, Rock climbing / bouldering in Teton Park. I struggled with making an image and have nothing to show. Felt like crap and doubted why I was at the workshop. It was later in the week that our group of 20 photographers finally learned to cooperate and spread out.
After the dissapointing climbing outing, I jumped at the chance to ride along with Ron for some light painting and star trail capture.
